Mystic Mud

My Man and I recently left our comfy home in the country for four raw acres on a remote mountain top, and an old battered 600 sq ft trailer, with little more than our two dogs, three cats, a trio of ducks, a flock of chickens, and our ten kids (yes, they all got the same daddy), and a whole pile of dreams for a homestead. I write about our adventures here as we attempt to build a more self sustaining life, the lessons learned along the way, the mistakes we make, and the obstacles we overcome. Throughout it all I keep a good sense of humor, and remind myself daily that all interesting stories have a conflict, and life is no different ~ if it was easy, it probably wouldn’t be worth doing.

One Year Later...

We’re still up here on our mountaintop. We no longer haul water from town. The twelve of us now get by with about 200 gallons of well water that is pumping into our newly gifted second mobile home via an RV pump and two 55 gallon holding drums that are graciously filled by sons twice each day. We’ve added some goats, a dog, and a few chickens - with hopes of more goats, chickens and ducks. We still struggle and learn each day, but most of all we love - each other and this life. The hardships are many, but so are the laughs and bonding. In a years time life has been stripped to the most simplest of luxuries and slowly we rebuild it into what we want most - self-sufficiency and a greater understanding of the universal truths of life.. It takes time to unlearn a lifetime of societies propaganda, and we unlearn it up here on this mountaintop, daily.

Raw land isn’t for the weak or unlucky - you’re going to need a lot of both to make it. If you’re looking for a picture perfect homesteading life that shows no signs of mud or poop - you’ve come to the wrong mountaintop. It‘s as real as it gets up here, and it gets more real by the day. Come, enjoy this adventure with us, but don’t say I didn’t warn you.
